The 2025 reboot of the classic crime drama Bergerac has now been acquired by the Japanese pay TV broadcaster Wowow.

This modern retelling of the BBC series from the 1980s continues the adventures of Jim Bergerac, a detective with a troubled past.

Set on the island of Jersey, the original series starred John Nettles as Detective Sergeant Bergerac, who was a recovering alcoholic and divorced father. The series ran for nine seasons on the BBC between the years 1981 and 1991.

The new series takes place in the Channel Islands, and Bergerac is portrayed by Damien Molony, best known for his role as Hal in the BBC’s Being Human and as DC Albert Flight in the BBC’s Ripper Street. In the reboot, former police officer Bergerac is forced to face a haunting old case, while he tries to solve the complicated murder of a wealthy woman.

The series is scheduled for launch on the Wowow Prime channel and Wowow On Demand in August. According to the agreement, the series will continue to be streamed internationally, on broadcasters NPO in the Netherlands, VRT in Belgium, SVT in Sweden, YLE in Finland, NRK in Norway, DR in Denmark, BBC First in Poland, TVNZ in New Zealand, and ABC in Australia.

The second season of the Bergerac reboot is also in the works, written by Toby Whithouse, Brian Fillis, Catherine Tregenn, and Polly Buckle. The series is produced by Banijay UK’s BlackLight TV and Jersey-based Westward Studios for streamer U and linear channel U&Drama. Banijay Rights acts as the distributor.
