ITV is bringing the heart-wrenching true story of Mavis Eccleston and Denis Eccleston to the screen in a new drama that explores the thin line between love and the law.

Based on real events, the series centers on Mavis Eccleston, who survived a joint suicide pact with her husband of nearly 60 years only to find herself arrested and charged with his murder. This poignant four-part production stars veteran actors Penelope Wilton, known for Downton Abbey, and Jonathan Pryce, recently seen in The Crown and Slow Horses, as the devoted couple at the heart of the tragedy.

The project is written by Chris Lang, the acclaimed creator of Unforgotten, and directed by Bruce Goodison, with production duties shared by Corestar Media and Indefinite Films. By delving into the Ecclestons’ lives, the drama tackles profoundly sensitive and controversial societal issues, such as the debate over assisted dying and the complexities of the justice system.

Ultimately, however, it is framed as a powerful love story that aims to bring a significant, socially relevant narrative to a wide audience.

ITV’s director of drama Polly Hill said: “This is a poignant and powerful real-life story and I’m indebted to the team at Corestar and Indefinite Films for entrusting Mavis Eccleston to ITV where important, socially relevant stories can be told and brought to the attention of a mass audience. It’s ultimately a love story and I’m honoured that Penelope Wilton and Jonathan Pryce have agreed to play Mavis and Dennis.”
