The new UK murder mystery Flavia, starring Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, MobLand), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes, Slow Horses, The Crown), is set to hit theaters soon. Based on the 2009 novel The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie: A Flavia de Luce Mystery by Canadian author Alan Bradley, the film follows the adventures of eleven-year-old amateur detective Flavia de Luce.

Set in 1951 in a picturesque British village, a dead body lies in an old manor, where the de Luce family has lived for 500 years. Flavia de Luce, an exceptionally bright eleven-year-old with a talent for chemistry and a fascination with poisons, discovers the corpse late at night, and with it, her true passion: detective work. Determined to uncover how the victim met their end, Flavia’s mission becomes urgent when her father, Havilland, admits to the crime.

Determined to prove his innocence, she must outwit the local police and stay ahead of the real killer, who now sees her as a threat. As Flavia digs deeper to clear her distant, mysterious father’s name, she unearths long-buried secrets about him and startling truths about her late mother, Harriet, a spy whose path Flavia seems destined to follow.

The film is adapted from the first entry in Bradley’s book series, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. The book series currently has 11 novels, with the last novel, What Time the Sexton’s Spade Doth Rust, published last year.

Alongside Jones, Freeman, and Pryce, the cast features the fresh talent Molly Belle Wright as Flavia. They’re joined by Annette Badland, Karan Gill, Hannah New as Harriet De Luce, Ariella Glaser, Tallulah Conabeare as Daphne De Luce, Michael Culkin, Jamie Beamish, Marama Corlett, and Max Cortezi.
