1 min read

As international buyers continue to seek distinctive crime dramas with strong authorial voices and franchise potential, Tall Tales & Murder is emerging as one of the buzziest new titles on the market.

Blending dark humor with gritty criminal storytelling, the series positions itself within the growing demand for elevated European crime content with global appeal.

ZDF in Germany and SBS in Australia have pre-bought the BBC and RTÉ crime drama Tall Tales & Murder.

The deals were announced by distributor Avalon on the opening day of London TV Screenings 2026. The series was originally commissioned in June 2025 by BBC and RTÉ, in association with Screen Ireland, as a two-season order comprising 2×6 episodes.

The cast includes Ella Lily Hyland, Aidan Gillen, Philippa Dunne and Packy Lee, bringing together established crime-drama talent and rising names.

Written by Stuart Carolan, creator of RTÉ’s hit crime series Love/Hate, the show is co-created with Emmy and Directors Guild of America Award winner Chris Addison. Produced by Avalon in association with Ireland-based Metropolitan Pictures, the drama is adapted from Caimh McDonnell’s eight-book Dublin Trilogy.

Set against a distinctly Irish backdrop, Tall Tales & Murder combines sharp wit with murder investigations, carving out a tonal space between noir crime and character-driven dark comedy.
