Digital i published a recent study on worldwide true crime viewership on Netflix,  which proved Canada as the leading country.

According to the new data, provided by the media consultant Beatrice Rossmanith at the Series Mania Forum last month, 60.7%  of Netflix subscribers from Canada watched a true crime production for at least 20 minutes in 2024.

The Australian subscribers earned the second place for interest with 56.5%, and Colombia came in third place, where the genre piqued the interest of 54.5% of subscribers during the same year.

In the list, the last place belongs to Japan, where just 11.2% of the subscribers watched true crime programs last year.

Digital i provides data for Netflix audiences in the U.S., Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Australia, South Korea, and Japan.

Based on Digital i research,  the UK scripted series Baby Reindeer was the most popular one among Netflix’s true crime titles, which was viewed by 70 million accounts across the listed countries.

On the other hand, the US scripted anthology series Monsters came in second place, reaching 61 million accounts, while the non-scripted American Nightmare placed in the third position, reaching 53 million accounts in 2024.

The interest in the non-scripted true crime titles among Netflix audiences has been persistently rising for years. Digital i data states that six of the top 20 documentaries by reach in 2020 were true crime titles, a number that rose to 15 titles by 2024.
