The BBC has announced a new drama series, The Northumbria Mysteries, centered on an unlikely crime-solving duo.

The Northumbria Mysteries stars Robson Green, known for Grantchester, in the lead role as Joe Ruby, a jack-of-all-trades whose life has been shaped by mistakes, regrets, and missed opportunities. His partner, DI Rose O’Connell, is an Oxford-educated, highly intelligent, cool-headed, and analytical detective, though casting for the role has yet to be revealed.

Set along the Northumberland coastline and surrounding towns in England, the series is built around a classic “odd couple” dynamic. As Joe and Rose tackle complex criminal cases, their contrasting personalities both challenge and complement each other, with their tension and chemistry forming the core of the story.

Produced by Newcastle-based Lonesome Pine Productions and directed by Gordon Anderson and Duncan Foster, filming is set to begin in Northumberland this spring. The series will consist of eight 45-minute episodes and will air on BBC One and iPlayer, although an official release date has not yet been announced. The project also stands out as part of the BBC’s broader initiative to strengthen creative production in North East England.
