Line of Duty star Vicky McClure is set to host a new true crime documentary series, Britain’s Murder Map.
Vicky McClure, along with her husband, historian and producer Jonny Owen, travels across the UK to re-examine crimes of historical and cultural significance. The series delves into cases that not only shocked the public at the time but also left a lasting impact on the nation’s legal and social landscape.
The five-part series covers unsolved murders, notorious miscarriages of justice, and landmark legal cases. Through consultations with experts, police officers, and victims’ families, Vicky McClure and Jonny Owen aim to uncover why these particular crimes continue to resonate decades, and even centuries, later.
The first episode investigates the infamous Burke and Hare murders in 1828 Edinburgh, exploring how the demand for corpses in medical schools led to a grisly series of killings. Subsequent episodes examine the execution of Timothy Evans, which played a role in the abolition of capital punishment in the UK, the mystery of Glasgow’s ‘Bible John,’ and the 1959 murder of Kelso Cochrane in Notting Hill. Cochrane’s death amid racial tensions eventually inspired the creation of the Notting Hill Carnival as a symbol of community unity and defiance.
The series concludes with a look at the 1910 Dr Crippen case, questioning Edwardian treatment of women and exploring why this domestic murder remains one of the most sensationalized stories in British criminal history.
Britain’s Murder Map premieres on Tuesday, 7 April at 9pm on Sky History and History Play.
