Banijay Finland is developing Disqualified, a journalistic thriller inspired by one of Finland’s most notorious sporting scandals. Based on the acclaimed book by sports journalist Johanna Aatsalo, the series will star award-winning Finnish actor Laura Birn, known for Foundation and Purge.
The project was announced by Banijay Entertainment on October 22 and presented at the MIA market in Rome.
Disqualified Explores Doping, Corruption and Press Freedom
Inspired by true events, Disqualified follows Aatsalo as she uncovers evidence of systematic doping within Finland’s world-famous national ski team. What begins as an investigation into sporting misconduct soon escalates into a battle against powerful institutions, public outrage and a justice system that turns against her.
As the consequences of her reporting intensify, Aatsalo faces the collapse of her reputation, career and personal life. Despite mounting pressure, she remains determined to pursue the truth and protect her source, even at a high personal and professional cost.
Minna Virkajärvi, executive producer at Banijay Finland, described the project as a gripping journalistic thriller centred on one woman’s determination to expose the truth despite extraordinary consequences.
Rather than focusing solely on the investigation, the series explores its wider repercussions, addressing abuse of power, corruption and press freedom. By combining investigative suspense with character-driven drama, Disqualified examines the challenges faced by individuals who confront powerful institutions and refuse to be silenced.
Banijay Finland Expands Its Scripted Slate
Disqualified joins Banijay Finland’s premium scripted portfolio, which includes television series, feature films and vertical storytelling. The company’s slate features crime dramas Murder in Hanko and Detective Maria Kallio, comedies Queen Heist and Supporting Actor, vertical drama Survival Sisters, young adult dance drama Dance Brothers and feature film The Good Widow.
Through projects targeting both local and international audiences, Banijay Finland continues to develop entertainment that combines compelling storytelling with socially relevant themes.
