The BBC has acquired the UK rights to Kabul, a six-part drama inspired by the events surrounding the evacuation of Afghanistan in August 2021.
The series will premiere on BBC iPlayer on August 2, before making its linear debut on BBC Four on August 15.
Set during the final days of the Western withdrawal, the story follows the Nazany family as they struggle to escape Kabul after the Taliban seize control of the city. Alongside their journey, the drama explores the efforts of French police officers, Italian diplomats, German military personnel, and U.S. intelligence agents as they attempt to coordinate the evacuation of thousands of civilians amid escalating danger.
The international ensemble cast includes Darina Al Joundi, Shervin Alenabi, Vassilis Koukalani, Hannah Abdoh, Jonathan Zaccaï, Gianmarco Saurino, Jeanne Goursaud, and Eric Dane.
Directed by Kasia Adamik and Olga Chajdas, the series is written by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkielkraut, and Joey Lavy. It is produced by Cinétévé and 24 25 Films, a Mediawan company, with Mediawan Rights handling international distribution.
Describing the acquisition, the BBC highlighted Kabul as a deeply human drama that examines one of the most significant humanitarian crises in recent history through the experiences of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.
