Japanese broadcaster Wowow has officially announced a six-episode live-action adaptation of Riku Onda’s acclaimed mystery novel The Aosawa Murders (Eugenia), with Yukino Kishii set to lead the cast.
The series is scheduled to debut on November 8, with new episodes airing weekly on Wowow.
Penned by Naoko Adachi (What Did You Eat Yesterday?), the drama is directed by Go Furukawa, with Hayato Kawai (Gannibal) also serving as a director. The story revisits a shocking mass poisoning in a coastal Japanese town, exploring the lingering impact of the tragedy through the perspectives of several interconnected characters years after the crime.
Kishii stars as Makiko Saiga, who witnessed the incident as a child and later became a novelist inspired by the case. Her search for the truth lies at the heart of the mystery.
Originally published by Riku Onda, The Aosawa Murders has sold more than 380,000 copies in Japan and has been translated into six languages. The novel was named a New York Times Notable Book in 2020 and won the German Crime Fiction Prize in the international category in 2022.
Wowow will also handle international sales for The Aosawa Murders series, presenting the title to buyers at TIFFCOM and ATF Singapore later this year.
