The performance of 195 crime drama series adapted from novels was examined across Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and Disney+ in 18 markets between January 2018 and March 2026. Over that period, the titles reached 168 million accounts, generated 38 billion streams and recorded 27.7 billion viewing hours. Average monthly viewing time for the category has also grown eightfold since 2018.
Are Viewers Watching Crime Drama Adaptations Until the End?
Completion rates were a key finding. Among viewers who started Season 3 of You, 74.6% watched the season through to the end, the highest completion rate among the adaptations included in the analysis.
Season 5 of You followed with a completion rate of 71.8%, while Liebes Kind reached 67.9%, Season 2 of The Sinner recorded 67.1% and Fool Me Once reached 64.6%.
How Do New Seasons Affect Interest in Earlier Episodes?
The data also shows that the arrival of a new season can increase interest in a series’ earlier seasons.
When Season 3 of You launched on Netflix in October 2021, 30 million accounts returned to watch Season 1. During the same month, 18 million accounts watched Season 2.
The figures suggest that a new season can create renewed interest not only in the latest episodes but across the wider series catalogue.

The performance of crime drama adaptations also varies by market. In Germany, these titles account for 1.45% of total streaming viewing time, around 1.6 times the level recorded in the US.
Poland follows Germany at 1.41%, the Netherlands at 1.38% and the UK at 1.33%. By comparison, the figure stands at 0.91% in the US, 0.36% in Japan and 0.17% in South Korea.
