The upcoming John le Carré adaptation Legacy of Spies, starring Matthew Macfadyen as the iconic intelligence officer George Smiley, has secured a number of international pre-sales ahead of its release.
Produced by The Ink Factory for the BBC in the UK and MGM+ in the US, the eight-part espionage thriller has been acquired by SBS in Australia and Sky New Zealand. Fifth Season is handling international distribution.
Where Will Legacy of Spies Be Available?
MGM+ will stream the series across several international territories, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as Brazil and Spanish-speaking Latin America.
Canal+ has secured the series for France and a wider group of French-speaking territories, including Switzerland, parts of Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa. Sky will also carry the drama in Switzerland.

Macfadyen, known for Succession, Ripper Street and Spooks, takes on the role of George Smiley, one of the best-known characters in le Carré’s espionage fiction.
The cast also includes Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Laurie, Daniel Brühl, Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu and Joe Alwyn.
Which John le Carré Novels Inspired the Series?
Legacy of Spies is primarily based on le Carré’s bestselling novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, while also incorporating material from his 2017 book A Legacy of Spies.
The project marks the first television adaptation of either novel.
Who Is Behind Legacy of Spies?
The series is currently in production, with Stephen Cornwell serving as showrunner and co-writer alongside Clarissa Ingram.
Michael Lennox takes on lead directing duties and also serves as an executive producer, while Claudia Llosa is the second director and co-executive producer.
The Ink Factory is producing the series in co-production with Amusement Park Film, in association with 127 Wall Productions and Paramount Television Studios. The company has previously brought other John le Carré works to the screen, including The Night Manager and The Little Drummer Girl.
