BBC has acquired the Irish factual drama The Murder of Mr. Moonlight that dives into the disappearance of Bobby Ryan, the show will star Brendan Coyle.
What is The Murder of Mr. Moonlight about?
The series is said the recount one of the most compelling true-crime cases in recent Irish history, the murder of Bobby Ryan and the events that would ultimately lead to one of Ireland’s longest-ever murder trials. The show follows County Tipperary DJ and entertainer Bobby Ryan (Mr. Moonlight) who disappeared in June 2011. Ryan’s body was discovered on a farm in April 2013. In 209, Patrick Quirke was convicted of Ryan’s murder and sentenced to life in prison.
The series is based on Catherine Fegan’s book, The Murder of Mr. Moonlight. It looks closer into the human story behind a criminal investigation that once gripped a nation. The Murder of Mr. Moonlight explores the relationships, secrets and tensions that lay behind a case. it examines the devastating impact of loss, the search for justice and the far-reaching consequences of a tragedy that changed lives forever through the perspectives of people closest to the events.
Who is in The Murder of Mr. Moonlight’s cast and crew?
The show is written for television by Malcolm Campbell with Meadhbh McHugh and Paul Howard. Dathaí Keane and Rachel Carey share the director seat. Alex Jones is series producer, and Therese Friel is producer. The series was produced Conker Pictures (part of Banijay UK) and Samson Films with additional funding from Screen Ireland.
The executive producers are Kim Varvell and Tommy Bulfin (Conker Pictures), David Collins (Samson Films), and Malcolm Campbell. David Crean is executive producer for RTÉ, Kate McColgan and Sarah Dillon are executive producers for Screen Ireland, and Cathy Payne and Simon Cox are executive producers for Banijay Rights.

The cast includes Brendan Coyle (Bobby Ryan), Sinéad Keenan (Mary Lowry, Bobby’s girlfriend), Owen McDonnell (Patrick Quirke), Hazel Doupe (Bobby’s daughter), Michelle Ryan and Carolyn Bracken (Pat’s wife, Imelda Quirke). Alongside these actors Lloyd Anderson, Danny Power, Helena Browne, Muiris Crowley, Aidan O’Hare, Emmet Byrne and Pom Boyd are also take their place in the cast.

At its heart are real people whose lives were profoundly affected by these events. Our responsibility has been to approach the process with care, sensitivity and rigorous research, while exploring the relationships and circumstances that made this case so compelling.”
