Neon has acquired the North American distribution rights to The Secret Agent, a political thriller written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. The Portuguese movie, which premiered in Cannes on May 18, is set to release in North American theaters later this year.

The Secret Agent takes place in Recife, Brazil, in 1977 and follows a technology expert who returns to his hometown to reunite with his young son. Pursued by contract killers and federal agents, he arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to blend in with the chaotic environment. However, he soon realizes the city is no longer safe and must find a way to escape from the country altogether.

The movie features Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leon, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho and Hermila Guedes.

This marks the third time Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho has presented a film at Cannes. He previously competed with Aquarius (2016) and Bacurau (2019), the latter co-written and co-directed with Juliano Dornelles. After its debut, Bacurau won the prestigious Prix du Jury.

The Secret Agent is produced by Emilie Lesclaux, Nathanaël Karmitz, Elisha Karmitz, Fionnuala Jamison, Olivier Barbier, Leontine Petit, Erik Glijnis, Fred Burke, and Sol Bondy. MK2 Films is managing the movie’s international sales.
