After redefining dystopian science fiction with Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker is turning his attention to crime. His new Netflix series, Charlie Brooker’s Blackmere, will blend a dark detective thriller with absurd comedy, led by Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell, Lena Headey and Rory Kinnear. The series is set to premiere on Netflix in early 2027.

What is Charlie Brooker’s Blackmere about?

Netflix describes Blackmere as an absurd comedy disguised as an intensely serious crime thriller.

At the centre of the story is Detective John Blackmere, a troubled investigator who leaves the rain-soaked northern city of Bleakford for London following the death of his partner. His mission is both personal and professional: avenge his partner and track down a ritualistic serial killer before more victims are claimed.

The premise appears to draw on the conventions of brooding British detective dramas while filtering them through Brooker’s distinctive comic sensibility.

When will Charlie Brooker’s Blackmere be released?

Netflix has confirmed that Charlie Brooker’s Blackmere will premiere in early 2027, although an exact release date has yet to be announced.

After using Black Mirror to explore the darker intersections of technology, society and human behaviour, Brooker’s move into detective fiction gives him a different set of genre conventions to play with. By combining a ritualistic serial-killer investigation with absurd comedy, Blackmere looks set to offer a familiar Brooker sensibility within a very different kind of story.
