The trailer for Nathalie Bibeau’s three-part documentary series, Doula: A True Crime, has been released ahead of its October premiere. The series investigates the case of Kaitlyn Braun, who faked multiple pregnancies.
What is Doula: A True Crime about?
Doula: A True Crime looks closely into the story of Kaitlyn Braun, who reached out to 40 doulas claiming she had been sexually assaulted and was in her third trimester carrying a stillborn child. After the doulas, who helped her and provided pro bono services like phone and video calls and round-the-clock in-person care, began to question her narrative, Braun was hit with 53 criminal charges. After piecing together a pattern that formed between June 2022 and February 2023, the doulas found others like themselves and started a grassroots campaign to alert authorities through a viral TikTok. The story was covered on a CBC and BBC podcast titled Kaitlyn’s Baby that launched last year.
The documentary includes the first interview with Braun, who conversed with Bibeau several times over extensive interviews and phone calls, offering insight into her actions and motivations. Filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau said, “Everyone knew that Kaitlyn Braun had committed crimes. I wanted to understand why.” She added, “The deeper I went, the less the story yielded to easy conclusions. Kaitlyn’s deception played on empathy, and the harm it caused was real.”
Who brought Doula: A True Crime to life?
Nathalie Bibeau is the writer, director, and producer of Doula: A True Crime. Boat Rocker Studios has acquired the international distribution rights to the Muse Entertainment-produced show for CBC and CBC Gem and will launch it at MIPCOM Cannes next month. Jonas Prupas and Courtney Dobbins are executive producers for Muse. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director of Unscripted Content, and Michelle McCree is Senior Director and Commissioning Editor of Documentary.
Doula: A True Crime will premiere on CBC on October 7.
