BBC Scotland has announced a new lineup of factual commissions covering terrorism, political scandal, Scottish folklore and high-profile murder cases.
The latest slate brings together four projects from Scotland’s independent production sector, ranging from historical investigations and true crime to explorations of mythology and political life.
Among the new commissions is Terror at the Terminal (2×60’), produced by Firecrest Films. The two-part documentary revisits the failed terrorist attacks targeting London’s West End and Glasgow Airport in June 2007. Drawing on eyewitness accounts, archive material and CCTV footage, the series examines the investigation that followed and the wider counter-terrorism operation.
From Political Scandal to Scottish Mythology
Finestripe Productions is behind Tommy Sheridan: Caught in the Headlines (2×60’, working title), which focuses on the rise and fall of Scottish politician Tommy Sheridan. The programme follows his journey from anti-poll tax activist and socialist MSP to a prominent figure caught up in political controversy, court proceedings and imprisonment. It will also feature access to Sheridan and his wife, Gail.
Mythology takes centre stage in Mythland (6×30’) from Rogan Productions. Paranormal psychologist Evelyn Hollow and comedian Zara Gladman travel across Scotland to investigate legendary creatures, unusual stories and contemporary folklore, looking at how traditional myths continue to find new forms in modern culture.
Firecrest Films will also bring back its true-crime series Murder Case (4×60’) with three new stories. The upcoming episodes will examine the death of Cameron Logan in a house fire, the disappearance of Edinburgh bookkeeper Suzanne Pilley and the long-running mystery surrounding Marion Hodge, whose husband was due to face trial more than four decades after her disappearance.
BBC Scotland Backs Independent Factual Production
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning at BBC Scotland, said the new slate reflects the broadcaster’s focus on bringing different genres and perspectives to its factual output, while highlighting the range of programming produced by Scotland’s independent sector.
The commissions add to BBC Scotland’s factual offering with projects that combine investigative storytelling, historical events, contemporary culture and Scottish stories with wider international relevance.
The new BBC Scotland commissions are produced by Firecrest Films, Finestripe Productions and Rogan Productions.
