The BBC is bringing Agatha Christie’s iconic detective Hercule Poirot back to television with a new adaptation titled Hercule.

The six-part drama will also be available in the United States through BritBox.

We Might Regret This and My Lady Jane star Edward Bluemel has been cast in the title role. The series is being produced by ITV Studios’ Mammoth Screen in collaboration with Agatha Christie Ltd, with Benji Walters (Code of Silence, The Leopard) serving as writer. Jonny Campbell will direct the first two episodes.

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: “Hercule Poirot is one of the greatest and most loved characters of all time, and bringing him back to the BBC is a real privilege. From the first moments of Edward’s audition we knew we’d found the perfect actor for Hercule, with a performance that feels both fresh and exciting, yet quintessentially Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot.”

Described as both an intimate exploration of Poirot as a man and a portrait of Britain between the two World Wars, the series aims to offer a fresh perspective on Christie’s legendary detective. Filming is set to begin this summer, primarily in Liverpool.

Hercule will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, while BritBox will carry the series in North America. International distribution will be handled by Fifth Season.

Poirot was previously portrayed by David Suchet in ITV’s long-running adaptation, which aired from 1989 to 2013 and became one of the most celebrated interpretations of the character.
